Finding a true laser specialist is not easy
Many clinics advertise ‘LASER expertise’.
What is the reality?
Many of them have only ONE laser (the one that brings in the most money, for example).
This is often a YAG laser, which they use for hair removal and to treat rosacea and leg veins (which is not without risk for the patient!).
Being a ‘laser specialist’ means investing significant financial resources to acquire all the necessary equipment and undergoing extensive self-taught training through apprenticeship.
It is also necessary to be in close contact with fellow laser specialists in France (Laser Group of the French Society of Dermatology) or around the world (IMCAS), as these techniques are constantly evolving.
It is also necessary to read specialist journals in the field to keep up to date with new scientific studies (laser treatment for acne, laser treatment for onychomycosis, laser treatment for perspiration, etc., all subjects that are constantly evolving).
All too often, ‘laser training’ is provided by the sales representative who sells the machine...
This is extremely unfortunate because practising dermatology in the 21st century without solid laser skills has become very limited.
Some dermatologists go so far as to deny the effectiveness of lasers for rosacea, for example, because they do not want to invest money and training in a KTP laser (a situation I have experienced!) or give their patients advice on lasers that they do not own and are not familiar with (another situation I have experienced).
