How to choose your cosmetic dermatologist?

The range of aesthetic treatments on offer is too broad: beauticians, general practitioners, dermatologists with varying degrees of training, plastic surgeons, other specialists, etc.

It makes sense to consult a cosmetic dermatologist and laser specialist to ensure you receive the best possible care.

As plastic surgeons are mainly trained for major operations, dermatologists will refer patients who need this type of surgery to a reliable professional.

So DERMATOLOGIST + AESTHETICIAN + LASER SPECIALIST

That makes one specialisation and TWO subspecialisations.

How can you judge the quality of all this?  Here are a few pointers:

1. Age

The doctor's age is linked to their experience, especially if they have all these subspecialisations.

2. Gender

It doesn't matter, it's a matter of feeling.

3. Which part of town  ?

The more ‘prestigious’ the neighbourhood, the more expensive the workspace is to buy, and this is obviously reflected in the bill you pay.

Some doctors deliberately seek out very affluent neighbourhoods, hoping to find wealthy patients who can afford expensive treatment...

IN NO WAY IS THIS INDICATIVE OF THE DOCTORS' SKILLS.

4. CVs

There are academic-style CVs.

They must contain as many ‘publications’ in scientific journals as possible.

Publishing takes you away from practice and is in no way a criterion for quality of care.

This criterion is only useful when applying for a senior position in hospital policy.

The best criterion is to find out how much time the doctor has spent in their practice and whether they have trained abroad in techniques NOT taught in Belgium, such as aesthetics and laser treatment.

With regard to laser treatment, the best criterion is the number of years of practice and the number of machines that the doctor owns and is familiar with.

As for the rest, conferences abroad are always interesting, but there is no way of knowing whether the doctor will listen to the presentations or just enjoy a holiday...

5. Websites

To have a beautiful website on the first page of Google, all you have to do is pay.

This should not be taken into account, especially if the amount of information provided is limited.

6. Online reviews

One of the worst criteria to use when choosing a dermatologist: these reviews are all manipulated and unreliable (see below).

7. The price of the consultation: a very delicate criterion !

Some prices are justified by particular experience, the multitude of machines available and used effectively by the dermatologist, extensive expertise, the time devoted to patients, technical facilities, nursing staff, etc.

Some high prices are linked solely to a wealthy clientele and a location in ‘chic’ neighbourhoods.
